Diversity and Inclusion in SSTG
Over the past 71 years, we at the Sandy Spring Theatre Group have played many roles in this community - some comic, some dramatic, some tragic. The role we hold most dear is that of community member. As a theater company we seek to embrace, uplift, and brighten our friends, families, children, siblings, and loved ones. Any endeavor that demeans, demoralizes, or dehumanizes another is against our core values, and we stand firmly against it.
Theater is not meant to give voice to the voiceless, for everyone has a voice. At the same time, it is simply not accurate to say that everyone’s voice is heard equally in our society. Too often some voices are actively muffled or silenced. There are long histories of silenced Jewish voices, LGBTQ+ voices, female voices, and racial minority voices, including but not limited to Black, Hispanic, Asian, and Native American people.
It would be arrogant to suggest that we are perfect, for no individual or organization is without flaw. And any true connection, whether it be through artist and audience or person to person, begins with an honest examination of self. This is Sandy Spring Theater Group’s commitment to the community: an honest and ongoing examination of self.
We invite all who wish to join us on this endeavor to become a part of SSTG, as directors, producers, cast, crew, volunteers, or friends.
We invite you to give us your feedback - the good, the bad, and the ugly. We are all learning and growing and we would like to do this with our community.
We love this community. We have been proud to be a member of this community for 71 years and, together with your strong and beautiful voices, we look forward to being here for at least 71 more.
